Winter farmhouse at Devils tower

Voy Kay 22 May 2020

The idea for this painting came up a few days ago, where I wanted to paint a farm tool in an environment worthy of America. 'Wayne Coley's art' gave me some inspiration and I decided to add a farmhouse. For the scenery, I wanted to use Jin7's Mount Fuji at first but then I realised that the whole scenery would fail with that. It needed an American mountain and my choice fell upon Devils tower (Wyoming). I visited this giant rock in the fall of 2013 and I had pictures of it in a snowy environment. So .... the ideas were there, the motivation as well and some three hours later, I came up with this typical American landscape.
Canvas used was a high quality 16"x20", prepared with liquid white. The colour of Devil's tower is less grey then in my picture but I am pretty sure that in some season or time zone, the used colour will be dead on! Hardest to do was the farmhouse, the easiest was perhaps the tree where I NEVER EVER before painted this so well and so fast. My scriptliner was flying and worth diamonds!!
The ancient rusty hay rake shows history and maybe the farmer, hidden in his warm and cozy house, still uses it!
I sincerely hope you all love this one, please feel free to comment and if possible, visit some other interesting paintings by myself and my fellow community members too. That counts for the articles as well!
Stay safe, till next one!

Voy, you did great job with the House and old fence . I did not realize what is that farm tool?

Mountain looks great! Against that bright blue sky! Did you use mix of blues for the sky?

Dear Sunnylady, the item is a hay rake. Google 'ancient hay rake' and you will spot hundreds of them. It was used to assemble the hay from the fields and was done per horse.
I have some excellent pictures from 'Devils tower' and took one of them as an example. It is almost 100% perfect, except the color and perhaps the mountain could lose some calories!

The sky was merely Phtalo blue but with only one filled brush. Meaning that one dot of paint was used for the entire sky. That gives the effect of getting lighter towards the middle since it mixes continuously with the liquid white. I added some shy clouds with a wave brush and …. voila!

The house was ment to look in good condition, except for the garage doors which are both loosened at the top. The farmer is way too old to repair it descently and only fills his days with glancing Devils tower from his porch at the back of his house with some 'moonshine' next to him! :)

Thanks Voy! I googled, this is very interesting tool! you showed it very well! I think you achieved your plan. House looks in the good shape and garage looks like not used often and a lot of snow around!

I was inadvertently overlooking this work.
I think this painting house and tree by the house are really wonderful.

Thank you Jin!!!
I have decided to paint this one again, on a new canvas but then with a bigger mountain, a bigger farmhouse and a bigger hay rake. It all seemed so small so I want this one to be a great painting and thus will fill the painting up a little more.
Also the foreground is way too white, it is difficult to see the snow covered on details (like the wheels) on it.
Glad you enjoyed this one, hope to read/view/cheer you again soon!

I like the scene and I really like the sky and clouds on this ..

Thank you LJM! The sky was shy in fact since I wanted most attention on Devils tower, the farmhouse and the hay rake. In the end, all three eye catchers turned out too small/little but the exercise was a major success to me and I will repaint it some day!

Till next one!
